We’ve all heard the saying it takes a village to raise a child. Historically, godparents were part of that village. Not just spiritual guides, but people who supported parents in raising children to become grounded, confident, and responsible adults.
In this latest episode, Djenys and Shilz discuss a topic close to their hearts that many can relate to, it’s either you have picked a godparent or have been picked to be one.
Choosing a godparent was never meant to be casual. It wasn’t about who you were closest to at the time or who would buy the best gifts. It was about asking someone to commit to your child’s growth and wellbeing for years to come.
In the past, godparents were closely tied to religious responsibilities standing at the baptism, pledging to help nurture the child’s faith. In today’s world the role seems to have evolved. I question if there is more pressure for godparents as there seems to be more to the role. Whilst Shilz’s attitude was more nonchalant towards the importance of the title she holds, Djenys in her role as a mother highlighted that many families, it’s also about -Being a role model, offering emotional support, stepping in during life’s challenges and sharing generational wisdom.
Whatever your thoughts might be on the subject, the ladies seem to bring us to a place of reflection in that It’s not just about the title. It’s about being present—when it matters and even when it doesn’t.”
As adults we know that relationships go through different seasons , Shilz and Djenys do well to highlight and reflect on how and why things can go wrong. Citing, misunderstandings about what being a godparent involves, changes in friendships, life circumstances making it difficult to stay involved or unspoken expectations leading to disappointment.
Shilz asked an important question: “What happens when the friendships or relationships change? Does the godparent still stay connected to the child?” For some families, the godparent fades into the background. For others, the child maintains a bond regardless of the adults’ differences.
5 Tips on choosing your child’s godparents from the start :
Before asking someone to be a godparent, consider-
Does this person understand the responsibility?
Are they aligned with my family’s values and beliefs?
Are they willing and able to maintain a long-term relationship with my child?
Can I approach them freely and openly discuss what I need them from them as seasons change? (godparents are not mind readers)
Will they communicate openly, even when things are difficult?
We can all agree that It’s not just vibes. It’s about being thoughtful, prayerful and intentional as this decision can shape a child’s future.
Godparenting is more than a title or a ceremony. It’s an ongoing commitment. As Djenys says “ It’s not just vibes”. It’s about thoughtful, prayerful decisions that can shape a child’s future.
Misunderstandings and life changes are inevitable, but honest communication can prevent small issues from becoming permanent divides. As the ladies shared, “It’s not about perfection. It’s about accountability, respect and honouring the commitment made by the adults involved.
Whatever your thoughts might be on the subject, because this is not an easy subject to discuss without one party feeling misunderstood…the ladies seem to bring us to a place of reflection in that It’s not just about the title. It’s about being present—when it matters and even when it doesn’t.”
